Berneeta Criss Wagoner, LISW, ACSW, QCSW, DCSW

Clinical Director, LISW

Bernie serves as the acting Clinical Director and works as a therapist, serving Clarinda and surrounding areas. With over 30 years of experience living and working in Southwest Iowa, she is a highly credentialed clinical social worker and a Diplomat in Clinical Social Work. Her expertise spans substance abuse, child welfare, mental health services, and school-based interventions.

Bernie is passionate about supporting children and families, guided by Ross Greene’s philosophy that “Children do well if they can.” She firmly believes that with the right support, families can provide the emotional and physical care their children need to thrive.

Committed to rural community development, Bernie values the opportunities Southwest Iowa offers. She encourages other professionals to explore rural practice, stating, “A rural community is a great place to live and work.”

Bernie is an active advocate for mental health and has played a pivotal role in developing Southwest Iowa NAMI through her involvement with the National Alliance on Mental Illness. She has also been a longtime member and leader within the National Association of Social Workers.

In 1985, Bernie was honored as Iowa’s Social Worker of the Year for her contributions to supporting families affected by child abuse and domestic violence in rural communities, as well as her work in developing Iowa’s multi-level State Licensure Law. She also serves on the Board of Education at St. John Lutheran Church.
